It's almost as if the sun knew we needed her today.
I can't remember the last time we captured sunbeams quite like this.. we had tried many times but have never seen the colours reveal themselves so boldly. The intense rays just burst through this morning and with it we were reminded of all the love and hope we had hung in our windows.
One minute it was grey -then suddenly it was as if the room had caught fire! My daughter was the first to spot the colour - like a beacon of love shining right onto her arm, she smiled as she settled in and sat perfectly still to examine her work which had all started to come alive. I heard shriek's as she found more and more hearts...
They were everywhere - hearts flooded our front room and danced across my daughters face. Time Froze. The suncatchers we made were projecting love right back over her heart and landing all over her little body- - I almost froze when I saw it.
She started to thaw... her eyebrows softened - her shoulders came down and she raised her hands to try and hold this magnificent beauty.
She has been having a rough time lately- and then suddenly we were gifted this spectacle. This mindfulness, this pause - it was just what she needed to settle back into her body and back into the moment. To start fresh.
She came back to me.
Suncatchers are magical this way - I have always loved their beauty, their symbolism and their ability to slow us down and completely transform our moods.
My Grandmother knew of this witchery too - Growing up she made sure to line every shelf and surface of her windows with coloured glass and prisms - it could be a vase or a piece of beach glass or mice made out of prism's and mirrors.
They were ready and waiting...
When the sun shone in -- she would sing and call us to the windows.
We would all rush to the living room - then stand still when we arrived. Then - we would just watch - and we would smile.
My Grandmother was a nurse - and she knew 'things'.... above all she knew how important the little things were and that we needed magic and micro healings each day. A hug from the sun she would call it.
And so - I have carried this tradition forward.
I still stick coloured glass in my windows and I always encourage the kids to make stain glassed objects and suncatchers such as the ones we made for Valentines Day (that I still dont have the heart to take down)..
We love to decorate the front window and dress it for every holiday. During the Pandemic we have ALWAYS had something up in the windows for us and for those passing by (or rocks decorated with quotes and meaningful words by the street).
It helps us all remember to stop and remember the little things, the beauty - - and that we are loved.
Hang it - it makes all the difference
